# Configure employee leave approvers

> Choose how each employee's future leave requests are approved in Teamper.

## Overview

Each employee has one leave approver route that applies to all of their leave types. Company admins can route future requests to department approvers, the employee's line manager, up to three custom approvers, or no approver.

## Who can use this

* Company admins can view and change an employee's route.
* Employees can view their current route on their profile but cannot change it.

## Choose a route

| Route | What happens when the employee submits valid leave |
| - | - |
| **Department approvers** | Teamper sends the request to the direct approvers for the employee's assigned department or team. |
| **Line manager** | Teamper sends the request to the manager on the employee record. |
| **Custom** | Teamper sends the request to one to three active employees selected for this employee. |
| **No approver** | Teamper automatically approves the request. |

**Department approvers** is the default for non-owner employees. The company owner starts with **No approver**, but an admin can change that route.

## Configure an employee's route

1. Open **Employees**.
2. Open the employee record.
3. Edit the employee.
4. Find **Leave approver**.
5. Choose **Department approvers**, **Line manager**, **Custom**, or **No approver**.
6. If you chose **Custom**, select one to three approvers.
7. Save the employee.

<Warning>
  If you include the employee in their own department or custom approver route, Teamper automatically approves their future valid requests and does not ask the other approvers to act.
</Warning>

## What happens next

The saved route applies to future leave requests. A pending request keeps the approvers that were assigned when it was submitted, even if you later change the employee's route, department, manager, or custom approvers.

Changing away from **Custom** clears the previous custom selections.

## Troubleshooting

### Department approvers cannot be selected

Assign the employee to a department or team with at least one active direct approver. A team does not inherit approvers from its parent department.

### Line manager cannot be selected

Assign an active manager to the employee record, then save the route again.

### A custom approver cannot be selected

Custom approvers must be active employees in the same company who can act on leave requests. Choose between one and three unique employees.

### A manager expected a request but did not receive it

Check the employee's current **Leave approver** route first. A manager receives the request only when **Line manager** is selected or that manager is included in the employee's department or custom route.
